In 1937 China, for the period of the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic ecclesiastical authority in Nanjing to prepare a parson for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the secluded adult among a group of cloister girl students and prostitutes from a nearby bawdy-house. When he finds himself in the unwanted predication of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese legions, he discovers the meaning of surrender and honor.
